According to a report authored by Phil Mango, consultant with Smithers, Spunlace was the fastest growing production route in the wipes market for 2021 while wood pulp was the fastest-growing raw material. In the meantime, the global demand for new flushable wipes is still surpassed by its supply capacity but the gap is narrowing.
Spunlacing, hydroentangled airlaid and wetlaid materials, and carded/wetlaid pulp remain the regular production routes. Two other routes on the rise are the Lenzing Web process for spunlaid cellulosics and the use of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAS), which are currently defined as plastics under the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive but are biodegradable even in marine environments.
